Welcome to South Boston

South Boston, colloquially known as Southie, was annexed by the city of Boston in 1804. Once primarily farmland, it served an important role in the Revolutionary War when George Washington fired cannons from Dorchester Heights, thereby forcing the evacuation of British troops on March 17, 1776. It currently has a population of about 35,000 and is roughly three square miles in area.

Southie boasts beautiful beaches and is also home to Castle Island, which is a 22-acre oceanfront public park. It also hosts the St. Patrick's Day parade which is the second-largest parade in the country, being viewed by nearly one million people every year.
